Charles Wood joined Anna Brindle, when she was involved with piloting the A&IT project. In September 2018, Charles very sadly passed away leaving behind a huge legacy. He was an amazing, hard working, committed and very kind and caring Chairman. Over the years he had visited many of our members and helped to develop the project into the success it is today.
Here he gives his personal view on what it was to be a volunteer...
"I have been fortunate in having had a responsible and rewarding working life in the RAF and NATO, and to be involved in town life through Vision for Frome (V4F) and local politics; but this has been heavily oriented towards management and organisation. After joining the V4F and ViSTA Active Citizens initiative in the town, the thought came that it would be good to do something lower profile and of direct practical value. When an Active Citizen proposed that there should be a reaching out to proactively find lonely and isolated people, and, where wanted, provide help, this seemed just the right thing to do. And so it has proved through A&IT, with me being just one of a great band of volunteers and coordinators, helping in a small way through a little bit of my time and effort. It is so good to see a growing group of appreciative members who get just a little bit, or more, of needed help and contact".Charles Wood, Former Chairman of Active and in Touch Frome
Suzi Mitchell
Suzi Mitchell began volunteering for Active and In Touch Frome as a one-to-one volunteer befriender and an Active Tuesday Group volunteer helper, and later she became a Trustee.
These are her words about what it is to volunteer with us...
"I personally have come to know and grow very fond of some amazing, like-minded people both in fellow volunteers and members. One member particularly has told me that being involved with Active and In Touch has literally, 'changed my life'." Suzi Mitchell, Volunteer with Active and In Touch Frome
Active and In Touch volunteers meet isolated, elderly, and vulnerable people and spend time with them, find out their needs and interests, and help them to find their own place in the community.
WHY BE A VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering is not only great for Frome, it makes the world a better place and could also make a positive impact on your life too. You could be part of this exciting local initiative. Whether you want to use your existing skills, develop new ones, meet new people or just feel good about yourself, volunteering with Active and In Touch will change peoples lives for the better.
Build your confidence
Many volunteers encounter new challenges when they begin giving time in their communities. Sharing these experiences with new people, they can learn a range of skills that will give them confidence to face challenges in other areas of their lives.
Introduce you to new friends
There’s no better place to meet like-minded individuals than through volunteering for a campaign or cause you believe in. Working together to bring about a change is a great way to bond with others and become part of a community that can stay in touch long after your work is done. Plus, you could meet people from a diverse range of backgrounds – people you may never come across in your daily life.
Create more fun in your life
Many volunteers are surprised at how much fun it can be to help others. Not every volunteer experience is the same, but by finding an opportunity that matches your interests, you have a good chance of having fun while giving time.
